In the simplest term, ETFs are funds that track indexes like the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, Barclay's Aggregate Bond Index, etc. When you buy shares of an ETF, you are buying shares of a portfolio that tracks the yield and return of the underlying index. The first ETF began trading in January1993. The S&P 500 Depository Receipt (called the SPDR or "spider" for short) was the first of its kind and is still one of the most actively-traded ETFs today. The first ETF to track a bond index became available in December 2003. This created the opportunity to begin building low-cost, well-constructed portfolios that adhere to an individual's specific investment objective.
